The Autodesk NC CAM team has launched the new release PowerMill 2022.1.0. This update includes a healthy mix of fixes, improvements, and new capabilities aimed at simplifying the daily life of CAM programmers around the world.

What's new in PowerMill 2022.1

Background NC program and toolpath verification
You can now queue the verification of NC programs and toolpaths, so that they can be calculated in the background. This means that you can continue to use PowerMill for other tasks, helping to increase your productivity.
Enhanced projection finishing
Options to manually set the minimum and maximum project range have been added to the Line Projection Finishing, Plane Projection Finishing, and Point Projection Finishing strategies. Previously, for these three strategies, the projection range was set automatically, which sometimes meant that toolpaths were generated in unnecessary areas. The same new options were added to the Surface Projection Finishing and Curve Projection Finishing strategies in PowerMill 2022.
Enhanced toolpath limiting
Limiting toolpaths by polygon has been improved by the addition of a Restore View option and the provision of a preview of the sketched polygon.
Faster model preparation
Improvements have been made to speed-up the preparation of models. This is most noticeable when editing toolpaths, where the time to scan a model can have the greatest effect on the overall calculation time.
Faster toolpath strategy dialogs
The toolpath strategy dialogs are now significantly faster to open, enabling reduced programming time.
Rest Finishing strategy (preview)
A new finishing strategy has been added to machine areas, such as corners, that have remaining stock left over by previous operations. Different toolpath styles are available for machining steep and shallow regions.
Note: This feature is a preview. Try it before it is fully released.
Trusted macros and HTML pages
A PowerMill security feature has been introduced, alerting you to potentially harmful macros and HTML pages, and allowing them to be trusted if they are known to be safe.
Additive Feature Construction improvements
- When creating a Feature Construction toolpath on an arbitrary surface, or a surface of revolution, you can now combine profile passes with raster infill passes. Previously, combining the two styles was possible only for planar or cylindrical surfaces.
- For Feature Construction toolpaths that combine raster passes with profile passes, it is now possible to define the tool axis along the profile passes with respect to the closest point on the previous layer.
Other enhancements
- The calculation has been improved when Use Orientation Vectors Calculated During Simulation is selected and the Proposed Orientation is set to Free. This helps reduce unnecessary rotary axis motion when multiple orientations are possible.
- By default, when browsing for a local option file using the Select Option File dialog, all types of option file are now shown. Previously, only .opt files were displayed.
- The documentation for the Simulation State parameters OrientationVector and ToolAxisConstraint has been improved. This is available in Help > Documentation > Parameters > Reference.


The fixes in PowerMill 2022.1.

An issue has been fixed where PowerMill infrequently closed unexpectedly when calculating Area Clearance, Constant Z, or Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpaths with complex geometry. PMILL-15235, PMILL-16080
Slice Area Clearance toolpaths now follows the model better. PMILL-15496
Fixed an issue where some passes were missing in 2D Curve Profile toolpaths. PMILL-16019
Spun profile calculation used in Turning has been sped up. PMILL-16226
A problem has been fixed that caused colliding moves to be left within a Rotary Finishing toolpath when using Automatic Collision Checking. PMILL-16472
A problem has been fixed that caused fragmentation in Rotary Finishing toolpaths when using Automatic Collision Avoidance. PMILL-15990
A problem has been fixed that caused the cusp-based stepdown to be calculated incorrectly when machining undercuts in a Constant Z Finishing toolpath. PMILL-15505
A problem has been fixed that caused a cusp-based stepdown to be calculated incorrectly in a Constant Z Finishing toolpath with the option to Machine Maximum Stock set. PMILL-15443
A problem has been fixed that caused fragmented passes in an arc-fitted Constant Z Finishing toolpath. PMILL-15245, PMILL-15117, PMILL-13090
A problem has been fixed that prevented two-way passes in Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpaths when the Machining Mode of some surfaces had been set to Collision. PMILL-15944
A problem has been fixed that caused the specified cut direction on the shallow passes of a Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpath to be ignored. PMILL-15820
A problem has been fixed that resulted in passes missing from a Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpath. PMILL-12681
A problem has been fixed that caused raster passes in a Feature Construction toolpath to be outside the feature. PMILL-16134
A problem has been fixed that caused some passes not to be calculated in a Feature Construction toolpath. PMILL-15940
A problem has been fixed that prevented the calculation of outward profile moves in a Feature Construction toolpath on base surfaces described as a Surface of Revolution or Arbitrary. PMILL-14536, PMILL-15063
A non-gouging link will now be provided if a collision-free link cannot. PMILL-16533
Point distribution settings are now applied even when a safe link cannot be provided. PMILL-16507
A problem has been fixed that caused PowerMill to close unexpectedly while identifying the flat areas of the model. PMILL-16617, PMILL-16702
A problem has been fixed that caused PowerMill to become unresponsive when identifying the flat areas of the model. PMILL-16642
A problem has been fixed that caused the identification of flat areas of the model at different Z heights to be incorrect. PMILL-16665
A problem has been fixed that caused areas to be omitted from a Rest Boundary. PMILL-16209
A problem has been fixed that resulted in excessive lifts within a Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpath for which collision checking was enabled and the Cut Direction was Any. PMILL-16462
NC Programs
Fixed an issue when writing NC Programs where the length offset number was output when length cutter compensation was off. PMILL-14330
Fixed an issue where erroneous MTD warnings would be raised when writing NC Programs. PMILL-14756
Corrected the Stepover and Stepdown parameters output for Area Clearance and Steep and Shallow Finishing toolpaths when writing NC Programs. PMILL-14708
Disallowed putting parameter expressions into entity names. NC Programs with names containing parameter expressions in existing projects cannot be written until they are renamed to prevent PowerMill closing unexpectedly. PMILL-15465
Fixed an issue where an NC Program's Output Workplane would be set to its mirrored version when a project was mirrored, saved, and re-opened. PMILL-11036
Setup sheet
Fixed an issue where workplanes were inconsistent sizes in snapshots of setup sheet. PMILL-12439
Fixed an issue where PowerMill closed unexpectedly when setup sheets were written for a project with a path close to the Windows path length limit. PMILL-14019
General
An issue where the tool loaded from a project incorrectly contained a zero overhang has been resolved. PMILL-16360
An issue with the image on the Rectangle page of the Multiple Transform dialog when Hollow box was selected has been fixed. PMILL-16254
Importing a project now preserves Text-Blocks in the NC Program. PMILL-15855
Support for VDA Translation has been removed as this is no longer supported in the Autodesk Manufacturing Data Exchange Utility. PMILL-15636
A new algorithm has been introduced to reduce the number of instances where a surface cannot be triangulated. PMILL-15123
When a Setup is copied, the clamps are now retained in the Toolpath thicknesses dialog. PMILL-15042
Changing the name of a taper-tipped tool no longer invalidates calculated toolpaths. PMILL-14632
An issue causing PowerMill to close unexpectedly when Setup stock was used with the Stock Model has been fixed. PMILL-14608
When switching to another Tool database, the stock material list now correctly refreshes. PMILL-9345
An inconsistency between the results of the variable "${project.nTotalTime}" in preview and print has been resolved. PMILL-7694
